During the month of March in 2019, I had the amazing opportunity to give lettering, bookmaking and printmaking workshops at Colegio Mercedes Abrego, in Montería, Colombia. There were 22 students ranging between 11-14 years, with special interest in calligraphy and lettering.
During the course of two weeks, we practiced the principles of lettering and calligraphy, bookmaking and rubber stamps. As a final project, each student made their own concertina book stamped with their personal identity, developed in lettering.
As part of an introductory talk, I emphasized the importance of creative careers, and even answered some questions about my own experience of working in the creative sector.
Being able to share with this group of quick learners also reminded me of the importance of allowing spaces for creative thinking in academia.
